The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulates ALL open burning, regardless of materials. In order to burn brush or leaves - even the small pile in your backyard - you are required to obtain a burning permit. These permits specify the materials which may be burned, as well as the precautions you must take in order to properly contain and extinguish the fire. Permits may be obtained from the Town Clerk's office. **Improper or unpermitted open burning can subject you to stiff fines, as well as liability for damages caused by uncontrolled fire spread and extinguishment.**
